Welcome to Hit the Ground Running with Metatdata!

When working with GIS, metadata is possibly the least thought about component. However, quality, up-to-date metadata can play a major role in managing data. The Nick J. Rahall, II Appalachian Transportation Institute (RTI), in collaboration with the West Virginia Office of GIS Coordinator, USGS West Virginia Office of Geospatial Liaison, West Virginia GIS Steering Committee, West Virginia GIS Technical Center, and West Virginia Association of Geospatial Professionals (WVAGP), received 2010 National Spatial Data Infrastructural (NSDI) Cooperative Agreements Program (CAP) - Category 1: Metadata Trainer and Outreach Assistance to provide Metadata Training for GIS users. Throughout the grant year, 2 workshops were held at the Marshall University Graduate College campus and 1 workshop was held at West Virginia GIS Technical Center.

The workshops targeted municipal and state government, along with any other people or agencies who use GIS and would like to learn more about this necessary component of GIS. The central aim of these workshops was to give participants a new appreciation and understanding of the importance of metadata. For metadata outreach assistance and continuous commitment, RTI created this Metadata Wiki website dedicated to metadata news and resources and to help form a collaborative online metadata community.
